Parks Highway Nenana Canyon Safety/Access Improvements
Nenana, Alaska.
The Parks Highway, which runs from Anchorage to Fairbanks, cuts right through the Nenana Canyon, which is the local business district outside of Denali National Park. The mix of high-speed traffic, trucks, and pedestrians made for unsafe conditions during the busy tourist season. USKH designed the traffic signals for the area and incorporated audible pedestrian signals that provide pedestrian timing information in a non-visual format. These were the first of their kind to be used in Alaska and were specifically recommended for this location because of the width of the roadway and the high percentage of elderly tourists. Since these are the only traffic signals encountered along the Parks Highway for hundreds of miles, and the signal system shuts down in the winter, an active advance warning sign was incorporated into the project to alert motorists to be prepared to stop. |
