Business Boulevard Area Pedestrian Safety Improvements
Municipality of Anchorage, project Management and Engineering, Eagle River, Alaska.

This Federally funded project received the 2002 Project of The Year award from the American Public Works Association.  Business Boulevard is a three- and four-lane collector road, which provides access to numerous commercial developments as well as several residential neighborhoods.  The project was initiated to improve pedestrian safety along the corridor by adding new, dedicated pedestrian space with safe crossing points, and to evaluate other options for enhancing pedestrian safety.

Issues of concern included speeding and poor access control. USKH completed a design study report, environmental checklist, utility agreements, prepared right-of-way plans, exhibits for public use easements and temporary construction permits, decision documents, provided engineering assistance during property appraisal and acquisition of Public Use Easements, bid documents, and provided construction assistance.

The improvements included new pedestrian facilities with concrete sidewalks and asphalt multi-use pathways, traffic signalization, new continuous decorative roadway lighting, two pedestrian crossing flashing beacon systems, extensive channelization, signage, traffic markings, retaining walls, utility relocations, and extensive landscape enhancements designed by our landscape architecture consultant, Land Design North.
