Ketchikan International Airport - Runway Safety Area Expansion & Runway Overlay
Ketchikan, Alaska
Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) contracted with USKH to complete an EA, permitting, and the design necessary to prepare bidding documents for expansion of the runway safety area (RSA) and a complete runway overlay at Ketchikan International Airport.
USKH is completing the EA and permitting for this project in conjunction with design services by the USKH Airport Division. To minimize environmental impacts, USKH is investigating the relocation of an important salmon stream. Environmental documentation, permitting, design, and construction efforts all require close coordination with the FAA, air carriers, and regulatory agencies.
The scope of work calls for shifting the runway 750 feet east along the runway centerline to accommodate a full RSA – a recommendation in the USKH-prepared master plan that was completed in June 2003. However, the EA must include a full evaluation of all alternatives proposed in the master plan and any other reasonable alternatives.
To minimize environmental impacts, USKH is investigating the relocation of a vital salmon stream east of the airport. USKH’s team includes habitat, geomorphology, and hydrology specialists to evaluate and design the new stream channel. An interdisciplinary team was formed by USKH that combines representatives of various resource agencies, DOT&PF, and FAA with our environmental and design team to facilitate the stream relocation. The EA is scheduled for completion in late 2005, with construction to follow in 2006.
USKH recognizes that environmental documentation, permitting, design, and construction efforts all require close coordination with the FAA, air carriers, and regulatory agencies. |
