Travelers entering the MACS Public Transit Park Facility are greeted by the striking cantilevered roof, which offers shelter for both passengers and buses.  Serving as a central hub and bus stop for the Fairbanks North Star Borough MACS public transit system, the design for this facility carefully coordinates access for standard 40-foot buses and pedestrians.  A warm and welcoming place for those in transit, it is an important feature of the Fairbanks North Star Borough public transit system.

Specific Components

  • Central dispatch position in a three sided butt glass enclosure – allows observation of the entire lobby and of the entrances to both the building and the two restrooms by a single attendant
  • Over 4,000-sf of covered bus loading area without perimeter columns, with glue-laminated wood beams
  • Interior finishes include radial rubber flooring, low concrete wainscot in the lobby, and full height fiberglass reinforced panels in the public restrooms
  • The exterior is a durable Portland cement concrete plaster (stucco)
  • Radiant floor slab used to provide practical heat and avoid damage-susceptible heating elements in the public areas
  • Air conditioning is provided to offset solar gain
  • Connected to district steam heat, and uses a heat exchanger to convert to a hydronic glycol/water mix
  • Indirect exterior lighting provided by up lighting the cantilevered roof from wall sconces to eliminate the glare and shadowing of conventional direct lighting
  • Set up for digital technology, including reader boards and global positioning system (GPS) bus tracking and monitoring for public convenience
