Summary of Position (general responsibility and purpose):
Assist in the development and design of project drawings, details, and specifications; within budget and
on time, in accordance with current architectural knowledge and practices. The purpose of this position
is to provide professional, technical day-to-day support, guidance, coordination, and input to others.
Educational/Skill/Specialization Requirements:
A graduate of a 5-year accredited Architecture college, or Bachelor’s and/or Masters degree in
Architecture. Professional Architectural Registration is required; with 12-17 years progressive
architectural experience. Advanced knowledge and experience using computer-aided design and
drafting programs using the company standard versions of AutoCAD, spreadsheets (Excel) and word
processing programs (MS Word). Graphic presentation skills and/or 3-D Modeling experience. If
designated a Project Manager II, may manage projects over $100,000.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
As a fully competent Registered Professional Architect, performs work involving the application of all
conventional aspects of architecture to the functional area of the assignment. Exercises judgment in the
independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques,
procedures, and criteria.
A lead position, this level includes technical direction over a group of architects and/or functions as a
technical specialist, formulating, developing, and applying advanced architectural concepts.
Works cooperatively with other managers and employees to achieve the company’s mission, vision,
and values.
Performs various tasks in each of the five project phases: Schematic Design; Design Development;
Construction Documents; Bidding and Negotiation; Construction Administration.
As a Technical Architect:
This position supervises the preparation and checks the accuracy of
contract documents.
Incorporates applicable codes, construction techniques, and sequences in various
projects, including all aspects of their disciplines. Supervises and/or performs site observations such
as recording and reporting of existing conditions and construction progress.
Handles problems and
questions as they occur during construction. Responsible for project cost control. Responsible for
external communications such as making telephone calls and preparing correspondence to clients,
officials, and contractors as required by various projects.
Writes reports such as feasibility studies,
condition reports, and recommendations. Performs building code reviews and prepares applications.
Responsible for
major design decisions, involving spatial, aesthetic elements, and detailing of materials. Documents the
progression of a routine project through correspondence, calculations, memos, etc. Follows routine
projects through approvals and construction.
Exercises professional judgment in areas of contractual
liability. Makes public presentations.
Responsible for accounting of individual project involvement; i.e., scheduling, scope, role, and budget.
Knowledge of estimating project staffing needs and capable of translating them into budget hours and
costs. Ability to monitor the budget of a task or series of tasks and make necessary adjustments to
keep on budget.
Capable of providing leadership to a team that is performing a sequence of tasks.
Ability to instill motivation to the team to meet projected milestones and capable of adjusting the
procedures to keep the progress on target.
Reports work opportunity leads to supervisor in the form of information obtained from personal
observations, newspaper articles, conversations, etc. Works with supervisor to maintain good client
relations. Follows up on qualifying leads as directed.
Contributes suggestions on business
development. Sufficient knowledge of marketing to assist in the preparation of proposals and /or
presentations.
In the Project Manager Role: This position must consistently meet and then exceed client
expectations by ensuring accurate, complete, and timely communication of information to and from
clients and firm staff.
Ensure the preparation of accurate, complete, and value-added work products by: monitoring and
improving the document delivery process; identifying and implementing ideas that save clients time and
money, or that effectively solve potential problems/opportunities; reviewing interim work products/submittals and providing needed feedback regarding accuracy, completeness, and value;
mentoring firm team members; and asking the client to identify products/services that provide the
greatest value.
This position would oversee the design, development, and completion of project documents, within
budget and on time, in accordance with current building codes and architectural knowledge and
practices.
This position would be heavily involved in promoting USKH to the community, exemplify the
principles of clientship, and build client relationships.
Ensure timely document delivery by: monitoring/adjusting schedules; communicating with client and
project team members; assigning/managing the needed resources; and completing assigned tasks on
or ahead of schedule.
Increase the flow of new work by: finding expanded/new work opportunities with existing clients; finding
opportunities to serve new clients; and preparing winning proposals.
Deliver profitable projects by: monitoring and acting quickly on budget deviations (hours/$) and extra
service opportunities; maintaining continuous open communication among client and firm team
members; and using available technology appropriately.
Develop firm staff through on-the-job and personal development plan discussions.
Accept responsibility for giving, seeking, and acting on feedback needed: for personal career
development and peak professional performance; to keep Principal-in-Charge apprised of project status
and needs; to resolve project-related technical problems; and to resolve project-related personnel
issues.
As a Senior Architect:
This position serves as a technical specialist, staff advisor, and consultant to
the architectural discipline, for a given architectural-related project or program function.
This position is responsible for applying extensive and diversified knowledge of architectural principles
and practices in broad areas. Uses advanced techniques, theory, precepts, and practices in the
architectural field and related sciences and disciplines. This position assists with the mentoring of junior
staff members in their career development.
Markets the firm’s architectural capabilities to establish new clients and enhance relationships with
existing clients. Prepares proposals for potential projects and scopes of work.
Participates in the selection of design teams and subconsultants and in the negotiation of fees and
scopes of work.
Participates in independent constructibility/design/planning reviews of other architectural projects as
part of the USKH Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) Program to determine compliance with
the project's requirements, budget constraints, applicable standards, value engineering considerations,
regulatory obligations, and accepted industry practices.
